Served In the Continental Army for 7 years, mostly artillery. He fought in the Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine and Monmouth Battles led by Washington. He was one of the organizers of the New Ohio Company and became its Surveyor General. Upon the organization of the Northwest Territory he was appointed its Secretary General in Ohio. He became acting Governor when Gov St. Clair was called to Philadelphia. Both in Ohio and Mississippi he was a strict law enforcer, which did not go well with the frontier culture of individual freedom. In 1801 he was replaced.
Donated by Winthrop Sargent (1852-1932) the original founder and first president of the SMG House. Possibly owned by Charles Francis Sargent. The Gilman family were fairly certain it was built by a Gilman in NH. Historic New England suggested it was a Centennial reproduction, which means a copy made around the centennial celebrations of our country.

The head of household was a member of the Fire Brigade, was responsible for his buckets (each house had 2) and was expected to respond to a fire to help with the bucket brigade.
This portrait of the young Judith was painted around the time of her marriage to John Stevens. The fashionable turban and softly draped satin dress are intended to indicate the sophistication and social status of this young lady.
Copley painted other members of Judith's family, another indication of their wealth and prominence in the community. The original hangs in the Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago.
