In April 1918 Sargent was commissioned by the British War memorials Committee of the Ministry of Information to paint a mural for a proposed Hall of Remembrance. He spent 4 months on the Western Front, sketching. This draft represented the Committee's vision of this commission. The end result accepted by the Commission was the 20' painting "Gassed".
