was born in Gloucester, married and practiced medicine in Pennsylvania,and after retirement came to live in MA where he spent most of his time painting. Along with his cousin Charles Sprague Sargent, the Reverend Levi Powers and Samuel Appleton of SPNEA, they founded the Sargent House Museum. His son, Winthrop (1887-1968), lived in Haverford PA. He was given the home Serendipity near Bass Rocks in Gloucester and served as Museum Chair of the Sargent House.
